Beyond Wester Campsie
From castles to coasts, mountains to glens, water sports to golf, riding and ski-ing, there’s plenty to explore in the local area. Angus is a hidden gem with a great mix of places to explore, places to eat, places to escape to, places of culture and some of the best golf courses in the world.
Here are a few ideas for days out, both nearby and within an easy drive.
Less Than Five Miles
- Peel Farm – (every day, all year round) café and farm shop, gift barn, goats and even cycle hire
- Wee Bear Café (Thursday to Monday, March to October)
- Lambing experience Incheoch (lambing season only)
- Cycle hire
- Reekie Linn (reekie – Scottish word for smoke, the visual effect of the spume coming off the water)
- Walks around the Loch of Lintrathen – watch out for the Ospreys
- Boat fishing on the Loch of Lintrathen
- Walk to Airlie Castle and explore the Den of Airlie

Visit Kirriemuir ‘the wee red toun’ (20 minutes’ drive), including the birthplace of J M Barrie (author of Peter Pan stories). Go to the playpark on Kirrie Hill and take a tour of the Camera Obscura (April to mid-October) and see images of the stunning surrounding countryside.

Local shopping at Alyth (15 minutes), including award winning fish and chips. Woodland and river walks around the Den of Alyth.

More shopping in the quaint streets of Blairgowrie (25 minutes), centre of the raspberry, strawberry, blueberry and cherry growing area.

Endless walking in the Angus Glens including Glens of Isla, Clova and Prosen. Lunch, tea or evening meal at the beautiful Glen Clova hotel sitting at the foot of Glen Doll in the Cairngorms National Park, where you can walk out into the wilderness and extraordinary beauty of Corrie Fee, or take a short sharp walk to Loch Brandy sitting above the Glen Clova Hotel. Eat out too at the Glenisla Hotel.

Drive or walk across the massive dam at the Backwater Reservoir.

See rewilding taking place at Bamff where beavers were introduced in 2002, see their amazing ‘lodges’ and tree stumps shaped by them.

Glenshee Ski Centre (50 minutes) Take the chairlift to enjoy some food and refreshment in the mountain café and maybe bag your first munro. Of course, there is the skiing in the winter months too when the seasonal weather co-operates.

Dundee, historic town including the famous V & A building with the SS Discovery anchored alongside.

Other places within an easy drive include Braemar, Pitlochry, Scone Palace, Blair Atholl, the House of Bruar, the fishing towns of Arbroath and Montrose and coastal walks at St Cyrus and Johnshaven.
